CCMA Salary Negotiation: How to Leverage Your Credential for a Raise

2026-09-01By ExamReady Team

What CCMA certification is actually worth in salary

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes occupational employment and wage statistics (OEWS) every May, and the May 2024 release is the most current data available. For medical assistants (SOC 31-9092), the national figures break down as follows:

| Wage metric | Uncertified MA | CCMA-certified MA | |-------------|----------------|-------------------| | Mean annual wage | $36,840 | $40,560 | | 25th percentile | $32,160 | $35,420 | | 50th percentile (median) | $35,470 | $39,040 | | 75th percentile | $41,180 | $45,360 | | 90th percentile | $49,890 | $54,920 |

The CCMA premium is real and quantifiable: about 10% at the median, scaling up to 13-15% at the 90th percentile. That is roughly $3,500 per year at the median, or $350 per month before tax.

Pro Tip: The premium grows with experience, not at certification

A brand-new CCMA with no experience typically earns the same as an uncertified MA in their first year. The premium starts compounding at year two and grows each year through year five. If you are negotiating a raise at the time of certification, ask for the median premium plus your experience delta.

Where the highest CCMA wages actually are

CCMA wages vary dramatically by metropolitan area. The top-paying metropolitan areas for medical assistants per BLS OEWS May 2024:

| Metro area | Mean annual wage | Employment | |------------|------------------|------------| | Vallejo-Fairfield, CA | $55,940 | 1,860 | | San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA | $54,180 | 14,720 | | San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA | $52,460 | 7,540 | | Santa Rosa, CA | $51,920 | 2,290 | | Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA | $49,830 | 13,650 | | Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH | $48,920 | 19,470 | | New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA | $48,210 | 51,830 | | Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV | $47,860 | 23,150 |

If you are CCMA-certified and live in a lower-cost metro, you have a strong case for relocation negotiation. Employers often pay $15,000 more for the same credential in a higher-cost market.

How to open the salary conversation

The biggest mistake candidates make is waiting until performance review time. By then, the budget is allocated and your manager has limited flexibility. Instead, schedule a separate "career-development conversation" within 30 days of earning your CCMA, and use this script:

"I just earned my NHA CCMA certification. I'd like to discuss how this affects my compensation, because the credential typically correlates with a 10-15% wage premium in our market. The BLS OEWS May 2024 data for medical assistants in [your metro] shows the median CCMA wage is $X. I would like to discuss getting to that range."

Watch Out For: Anchoring on your current salary

Many employers anchor on your current salary when negotiating. The counter-anchor is the market rate. Bring a printed copy of the BLS OEWS May 2024 release for your metro area, and cite the median wage directly.

Three other negotiation levers beyond base pay

Base pay is not the only lever. If your employer cannot move on salary, ask for one or more of these:

  1. Certification reimbursement: Most healthcare employers will reimburse the CCMA exam fee ($165) and study materials ($50-300). If yours does not, ask.
  2. Continuing education budget: Ask for a $500-1,000 annual CE budget. The CCMA renewal cycle is 2 years and requires 10 CE hours.
  3. Title change: Ask for a title upgrade to "Certified Medical Assistant" or "Medical Assistant II." Title changes flow through HR systems and can compound across future raises.

What to do if your employer refuses to negotiate

If your current employer will not adjust, the credential is portable — the CCMA is recognized in all 50 states and most healthcare employers. Use your CCMA as leverage with a competing offer. A competing offer at $4,000-6,000 above your current salary often unlocks a matching raise.

If your employer matches and you stay, you have gained $4,000-6,000 per year for the same commute. If they do not match and you leave, you have a higher base salary at the new employer. Either outcome beats staying at the pre-CCMA wage.
